Why the Sardinian case fills a gap in the representation of Mediterranean protohistory.

Comparative analysis
A gap in the World Heritage List
The proposed property represents one of the most significant expressions of monumental sacred architecture in European protohistory, owing to the consistency of its preserved heritage, the variety of architectural types and the quality of its construction solutions.
Within the World Heritage List, protohistoric societies of Europe and the Mediterranean are still only limitedly represented, particularly with regard to cult systems and the role of the religious dimension in the organization of communities.
The Sardinian case preserves an articulated cult system, widely spread and developed continuously for more than a millennium: water cults, ancestor cults, community practices and the sacralization of the landscape.
